How to Get Organized at Work and at Home

My Top Five Tips for Maintaining Structure Throughout Your Daily Life

Through my work at AYSHA NY, I always aim to help ambitious women throughout all aspects of their life. That means, aside from making sure my clients look their best, I also impart plenty of career and life advice based on what has worked best for me. And one of the things that helped me greatly throughout the years is my ability to stay organized.

You don’t have to completely overhaul your daily routine to have some kind of structure. By making a few small changes gradually, you’d be amazed at what you can accomplish.

Below are my top five tips for how I stay organized at work, home, and everywhere else.

1. Set Clear and Achievable Goals

Staying on top of things is easier when you know what you want to accomplish. Set short and long-term goals for yourself, and go through all the steps you’ll need to take to achieve them. And try not to make them too unrealistic — start small, then work your way up as you progress. And don’t forget to give yourself a timeline for added motivation and a clearer routine.

2. Utilize Lists and Other Tools

Get into the habit of making lists for work, errands, at-home chores, and other important tasks. Also, learn to rely on calendars to keep better track of your schedule, especially if you work more than one job. I prefer writing everything by hand in my planner, but you can use your phone or tablet if that works better for you.

There are plenty of other tools you can incorporate into your routine as well, such as a label maker or even a timer, which would really come in handy for this next tip.

3. Hold Yourself Accountable

One of the best ways to get organized at work and at home is to monitor your progress by keeping daily tabs on your lists. Every once in a while, go over what you’ve done so far and identify areas in which you can improve. And once you find them, make working on those your priority as you go about your day. I’d even recommend setting up an arrangement with your coworkers or friends, where you check-in with each other regularly.

4. Focus on One Task at a Time

It’s easy to get overwhelmed when you have a lot on your plate and don’t know where to start. And when that happens, nothing gets accomplished. My advice? Determine what needs your immediate attention and focus on that first. If there’s an approaching deadline, or an emergency task that needs to be done now, make that your priority.

Be sure to set a certain amount of time for each job before moving on to the next one. This way you’ll make progress without stressing yourself too much.

5. Keep Your Workspace Neat

Your mind is cluttered when your workspace is cluttered, so make sure everything has its proper place. Put things away as soon as you’re done using them, and make sure there’s enough space for all your paperwork and supplies. Also, get some stylish boxes and desktop organizers that will make you want to use them every day.

At the end of each work day, look over your space and straighten it up so you can start each morning with a clear head. And at least once a month, go through everything you have to see what you should keep or toss.
